Current Status of SETI - The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence

W. T. Sullivan, III (Dept.of Astronomy & Astrobiology Program,
University of Washington, Seattle, USA)

SETI is the search for evidence of technology created by
extraterrestrial intelligence. Most projects to date have searched at
radio wavelengths for either purposeful or leaking signals, but in
recent years there has been increasing attention paid to searching for
optical pulses from possible powerful lasers. This talk will summarize
the various SETI strategies, describe recent searches (such as Project
Phoenix and seti en home), and look to the future, especially with regard
to the Allen Telescope Array now being built in California.

In the context of the field of astrobiology, it seems much more probable
for simpler, microscopic life than for intelligent beings to exist in
any given planetary system. Yet in terms of a strategy for achieving the
earliest success in detecting extraterrestrial life, it is not at all
certain, because of the very different techniques and ranges of the
required searches, whether microbial or intelligent life might be found
first.
