                                    Resum

Nucleus-nucleus collisions at ultra-relativistic energies (sqrt(s)>100A GeV)
 aim at the production and study in the laboratory of the Quark-Gluon-Plasma
    (QGP), a deconfined (and chirally symmetric) phase of hadronic matter
 predicted by lattice QCD calculations. I will first review the experimental
 observables that physicists have at hand in order to probe and characterize
  the QGP properties. Then, I will present and discuss the first data from
   Brookhaven's Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) collisions recorded
during summer 2000, focusing mainly on the results of the PHENIX experiment.
