Abstract
Observational and theoretical studies of relativistic outflows and
supermassive black holes (SMBH) have reached a stage at which they can
be considered in a broader physical context. SMBH and relativistic
flows, both commonly found in galactic nuclei, may play a crucial role
in formation and evolution of galaxies and the Universe at large.
SMBH are likely to provide the ultimate testing grounds for verifying
theoretical models in cosmology and fundamental physics.
High-resolution observations of radio emisssion from relativistic
flows remain one of the tools of choice for probing physical
conditions in the immediate vicinity of SMBH, complemented and
enhanced by the novel techniques and instruments introduced recently
in the optical and high-energy bands. Some of the recent results in
these fields will be reviewed in the presentation, with a view of
putting them in a wider scope of astrophysical and cosmological
research.
