Summary:
General relativity predicts that accelerated masses emit gravitational
waves, that is, oscillations in the fabric of space and time.
However, everyday motions of masses like cars or planets generate
waves which are many orders of magnitude too small to be
detectable. Exotic extremes are required for strong gravitational
waves. The prime example of huge, compact masses accelerating
towards each other at relativistic speed are colliding black holes.
This talk gives an elementary introduction to black holes and
gravitational waves, and to the ongoing effort to compute black hole
collisions with supercomputers.
