I will present a new semi-analytical model of galaxy formation, GECO 
(Galaxy Evolution COde), aimed at a better understanding of when and how 
the two processes of star formation and galaxy assembly have taken 
place, by comparison with a wide variety of recent data. I will 
introduce the basis of the semi-analytical approach and the baryonic 
physics - gas cooling, star formation, feedback -  included in the 
model. Then, I will show the ability of the model in reproducing both 
local boundary conditions, such as the local stellar mass function, and 
high-redshift data, focusing in particular on the time-scales of stellar 
formation and mass assembly, as constrained by near and far-IR surveys.
