Abstract:
In the last years, there is a growing consensus that our traditional
picture of disk galaxies being purely described by an exponential
decline in brightness is unsustainable. In fact, the nature of the
outer regions of the spiral galaxies seem to be much richer both in
shapes and in stellar population properties. All this richness informs
us about the way disk galaxies are assembled over time. I will
summarize what we have learned recently about the nature of the outer
regions of the spiral galaxies, putting a particular focus into a set
of new deep observations with the SDSS Stripe82 reaching 30 mag/arcsec^2.
