                                    Resum

A recent proposal by Burgess, Ibanez and Quevedo sets the string scale at an
     intermediate scale of approximately 10^11 GeV. This can explain the
 weak-Planck scale hierarchy without unnaturally small dimensionless numbers
  or large hierarchies in fundamental dimensionful scales. In this talk we
review new phenomenological aspects and constraints from lowering the string
    unification scale to 10^11 GeV, such as Yukawa unification, spectra,
   radiative electroweak symmetry breaking and charge and colour breaking
                                  minima.
