                                    Resum

A brief historical overview is given on tracking at hadron colliders. The
performance and physics potential of past and present accelerator facilities
are compared with LHC expectations. The concept of charged particle
(precision) tracking and vertex detection in Atlas is discussed. It is
argued that precision tracking at the high luminosity phase of the LHC,
requires innovative new technologies. Those will only be accessible for the
HEP community when inter-disciplinary collaborations with other science
institutes and industry can be established.
