Abstract

The time evolution of two, independent two-level atoms immersed in a bath
of external quantum fields is described by a quantum dynamical semigroup,
i.e. by a one-parameter family of linear transformations acting on the
space of atom states, encoding effects of noise and dissipation. Although
not directly coupled, the two atoms can become quantum correlated
(entangled) through the indirect action of the bath: entanglement
production can be controlled by varying the bath temperature and the
spacial distance between the atoms. For infinitesimally close atoms, the
quantum correlations can persist even for very long times.
